BreastfeedingThe benefits of breast milk extend well beyond nutrition. Not only does it contain absolutely everything that your baby needs for the first six months of life, it also protects your baby from many common childhood illnesses and it’s good for mum too!
Protection for Baby Diarrhoea, colic, respiratory illnesses and ear infections occur less often in breast fed babies. Babies who are exclusively breastfed for the first six months are also less likely to develop food or respiratory allergies. There are also links between breastfeeding and protection against childhood leukaemia, type 1 diabetes and a lowered risk of SIDS.
Benefits for Mum Breastfeeding helps you to lose those extra pounds you put on during pregnancy. Making all that breast milk burns calories! Nursing also triggers the release of the hormone oxytocin. This can help to lower your stress levels and because oxytocin helps your uterus to contract back to size after birth, it reduces post-partum bleeding. Recent studies have also found that the longer women continue to breastfeed, the more protection they have against ovarian and breast cancer.
